Tender Raw Banana Stir Fry

One of my favourite stir fries ….. usually prepared during rainy season when you get as many tender bananas as there is a chance of the plantains getting uprooted during heavy rainfall….So my Bappamma who does not waste any single thing in her backyard prepares this and we used to simply love this stir fry. The speciality of this stir fry (upkari) is that you dont chop the raw bananas ,,as they would be too tender and small …you need to remove the skin and crush them a little as you do for thendle thalasini ….keeping a little skin intact (so that the  banana wont get cut in to pieces while you crush them ) ….Interestingly this is also called as  “ajji bhodko ” ( meaning grandmom’s head ) …..i don’t know what connection this has got with poor grandmoms but surely some interesting  story would be behind it…..

          Ingredients
  • Tender small bananas  –  20 to 25
  • Red chilli powder – 3 tsp (or adjust accordingly)
  • Garlic cloves   – 10 to 12

Method :

  1. Peel and crush the bananas as I have described keeping a narrow part of the skin intact .
  2. Now marinate the bananas with red chilli powder and salt for half an hour.
  3. Heat oil in a kadayi .
  4. Add gently crushed garlic cloves to the oil and let it fry for a few seconds.
  5. Add the marinated bananas . and Stir well .
  6. No need of adding water but if you prefer you can sprinkle little water…
  7. Cover it with a lid and keep on low flame
  8. Cook till the bananas are soft and attains a fried texture…..
  9.  Turn off when its done….

Enjoy as a side dish with rice.
NOTE
1. If you don’t get the tender bananas you can try it with normal raw bananas too..
2. Remember the garlic cloves need only to be fried for a few seconds, ,don’t let it turn reddish.
