Karathe (bitter gourd) Bhutti/Puddi sagle is a lip smacking coconut based dish especially for bitter gourd fans. Adds zing to even the plainest of amchi meals.
Ingredients :-

  • 4 med sized bittergourds
  • 4 med sized onions chopped
  • 3tsp coriander seeds
  • 1.5 cups of grated coconut
  • 1tsp fenugreek/methi seeds
  • 12 roasted red chillies (increase or decrease as per spice reqd)
  • Tamarind lump the size of a marble
  • Oil as required (at least 2 to 3  table spoons)
  • mustard seeds – half ts
  • salt to taste

Procedure:-

  1. Peel the skins of the bitter gourds using a scraper.
  2. Wash and cut into small pieces discarding the seeds if any.
  3. Apply salt and keep aside for half an hour.
  4. Heat some oil in a pan, squeeze the bitter gourd pieces to drain the salt water, put it in the oil and saute until crisp and brown.
  5. Grind coconut along with the roasted red chillies and tamarind using a little water
  6. Add the coriander seeds and the methi seeds(both slightly fried in a lil oil) and grind again. keep this aside.
  7. Now heat some oil in a pan ,add the mustard seeds,once they crackle add the chopped onion and fry till golden brown.
  8. Then add the ground masala and a little water and salt to taste and close the lid and let the masala cook and thicken.
  9. Finally add the sauteed bitter gourd pieces and let it cook in the masala for a couple of minutes.
  10. Karathe bhutti is ready.

PS: Be careful while adding salt to the masala as the bitter gourd pieces would have retained some salt…So adjust accordingly.
